I loved it, although I loved your previous, less dark story more.  Not an issue with your writing--just with this one, I wanted to reach through the screen and strangle the 16 year old brother and his abusive father.

Weird.

The censor let me get away with "shitty" three times but blanked out "a sshole". Oh, well, fixed it.

I have been searching for ways to motivate my writing.  I asked some author friends to send me blurbs and prompts to see if they offered a jumping off spot.  Skip Trace offered "framed by my brother" as a prompt.

That clicked with me and I sat to write out my usual sort of product but it wasn't working. I felt I needed to go in a dark direction and do something I rarely do and that is put a shitty dad in the picture.  What is better than a shitty dad? Well, a shitty big brother added in as well.

Simon is gay. His brother has turned hateful because of it and the dad, well, he's just an a s s hole. Mom is ambivalent at best. Jake, the older brother, is a dumb jock but does manage to set Simon up to be punished by Dad.

This one is not happy and fluffy but I am still proud of it and would ask you to give it a shot.

This story did not even exist in my brain until late this past week. I was having a conversation with Jack about different things and we began to reflect on how the evidence of spankings in the school locker room were rather common in the 70s. We also had some laughs about the bravado most boys used to share concerning their spankings. A thing that wa often heard was, "It didn't hurt."

That phrase then lodged itself in my brain complete with characters, a plot, and a basic outline. This one begged to be written.

It is a simple story about two 13-year-old friends, Tony White and Rodney "Goose" Goslin, set in 1978. Tony relates the story and tells about his and Goose's experiences with showing off a spanked backside in the Junior High locker room.

I decided to do something that I have not tried before. I created some AI images depicting two scenes from the story and posted them with a story teaser on the AI forum. That link is here: viewtopic.php?f=30&t=10460&p=197151#p197151

Please give "It Didn't Hurt" a read and let me know what you think.

I can't access it because I don't have an account.

You don't need an account to read stories at MMSA. There is a new CAPTCHA you have to pass through but anyone can read stories.

The CAPTCHA verification is available to all readers.

Not sure where the confusion is. Adam is not in 4H and Herman is not a 4H project. The story says nothing about 4H and makes clear a happy outcome for Herman.

DMK.

I wrote that before even reading the story.  It was just my first impression.  Farm boy and pig.

I now have read the story and loved it.  Nothing 4-H in this story.  This is about the pure love between a boy and his pet.  That love is true whatever the pet may be.  Never personally experienced it myself, but have witnessed it with other boys.  Which is why a boy will run out into the street in front of traffic to save his puppy.  Herman is lucky to have a boy like Adam and Adam is lucky to have a pet like Herman.

David, I loved the story.

Z, aren't 4H livestock always raised to be sold for slaughter to the highest bidder?  That makes them not really pets, but something else, making their raising and sale traumatic for some, perhaps many, 4H kids.  A former farmer acquaintance's 10 year old was devastated when his 4H project, a lamb, became family dinner.

You are correct that most animals in 4-H are bid on or sold outright.  Usually, to be meat for a home or store.  Not all of course.  No absolutes on anything.  But unless the kid is new to 4-H, they know the end to their animal.  Heck, even just animals they raise on the farm get eaten at some point.  Now, kids being kids, they still make the animals pets and care for them as pets.  It's life on a farm.  Raise and eat.
