Set in rural Tennessee, the story is about Baptist preacher's son Bart Montgomery,  who is a twelve-year-old in seventh grade.  Thinking he is helping a friend, Bart gets caught violating a serious school rule.  (Don't our boys always end up getting caught?) Bart lands in the principal's office where we meet Mr. Irby.

If I write more then it will spoil the fun you will have reading this one.

Occasionally, the rare story comes around that will never be forgotten and will be a go-to standard.  I will be so bold as to say that this story ranks as one of the best and most powerfully written stories on MMSA.

After reviewing the story, I had to pause and get my emotions under control.  This story is a masterful blend of outstanding characters that reach out and grab you and pull you in to their lives. This is a superb tale soaked in realism and credibility.  Yeah sure, it is a spanking story, but it is far more than that. This is a work to be treasured.

On the surface, it is a simple story of brothers Grady and Richie and their friend Danny. We watch these characters grown from boys to men.  Some of them need to grow up quicker than the others.  The parents are not the beasts that are often portrayed in the stories we read but are truly loving and kind people who only have the boys' best interests in mind.

Grab and box of tissues and give this one a read.  Do not miss out on this!
