Glad you enjoyed it, PJ.  I know Adric put in a lot of work into this collection and sharing it.

I started to ask where you thought it should be posted, but I guess we'll have to wait to see how the new forum is designed when it appears again.

In his reply, WD made the interesting point that the story is told from the boy’s perspective, who assumes his father is swinging as hard as possible, when it’s likely likely that dad held back a little. Still, not a fun experience, to be sure!

My feeling was that it was a pretty harsh start for the boy's first time, but now that you say that, I guess it seemed much harsher than it was BECAUSE it was his first time.

This is a simple, straighforward, and very enjoyable story.  A great read for my tastes.

I'm hardly rescuing anything; just making room for people to stay in the habit of chatting, while Flagellant updates and improves.  Thanks for the thought, though.

Most welcome.

If the section includes interesting threads I hope you won't eliminate it when the new official site is up and running, but simply close it to further contributions.

Good point, and that is probably what we'll do.

MMSA Discussion / In General

To be clear, this is a temporary site, while Flagellant is working on getting updates made and a new MMSA forum posted.  Once that's back, I'll eliminate this section.  In the meantime, feel free to make anyone you think needs to know about it aware.

We already have a place to talk about and recommend stories, so I didn't bother with that.  We already have a General Discussion, which should be the same as the Soapbox.  Johnno, PJ Franklin, and David M. Katz are all already aware of this section, so hopefully they'll be checking in to answer any questions that might arise.

If there are any other sections you think we need, please et me know.

Thanks, Jack.

MMSA Discussion / Re: MMSA Forum is down

There does though have to be a limit. We had a forum where, over some 20 years, a community was built of those with an interest in common who enjoyed participating. All the regulars must be missing it, some more than others, perhaps even feeling that they have been deprived of a safe haven. At what point should we say that we cannot wait any longer to get together again? Will this thread still be relevant at Easter?

What if we temporarily added an MMSA-related section here with similar topics to discuss stories and posting questions?  DMK obviously would know, and we could inform Johnno and PJ, so there would be official input.

As promised, this is the original 14-page treatment I sent Skip when I first had this idea.  Back then, it was just for me and him to share, which becomes obvious in places (or maybe I was hoping he'd like it enough to expand it, which is really what happened).

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1neg3Tzg6J1lAHSxbVdZBDX2AjkZaLsRAWZ9_-blqI5Q/edit?usp=sharing

If this format doesn't work, let me know, and I'll copy and paste it here.

Thanks again for all the kind feedback.

All of this story is now posted.

Part 3 - https://malespank.net/viewStory.php?id=60155

Part 4 - https://malespank.net/viewStory.php?id=60166

BIG OL' HONKING SPOILERS FOR PART 4

Spoiler (hover to show)

It's been a long road, and there have been a lot of changes for both Skip and myself.  He did a huge amount of work turning my original treatment into a real story, and at the same time, he did a lot to make me understand why I always loved Ordinary People so much.  It was a privilege to play in his sandbox again, so thanks to him and thanks to all of you who took the time to read it.  Hope it was as good for you as it was for me.

Thought I'd mention that part 2 is now up - https://malespank.net/viewStory.php?id=60130

And since I forgot it in my first post - https://malespank.net/viewStory.php?id=60102

We had one feedback on part 1 that was basically complaining about too much detail.  To me, it's the quotidian details that make a story like this.  It's easy to write a wham, bam. thank you, sir story (but even then, not always able to do it well), to me, it's the details Skip put into developing the situation, the characters, and the budding relationship that really make me invested in the story.

Spoilers incoming for Part 1.

I believe it was W.H. Auden who first said 'thou shalt not read the Bible for it's prose.'  Likewise, I doubt many people go to MMSA seeking high literature.  Yet to me, while the spankings and paddlings are excited, I'm really moved by a man traumatized by loss, who's still been putting one foot in front of the other, yet who still hasn't recovered from it.  Not completely.  Reminds me of a song from Garth Brooks Ropin' the Wind album - What She's Doing Now.  So yeah, I guess if all you want is for some kid to get paddled so you can get your rocks off, that kind of thing gets in the way.  To me, that's the kind of detail that makes the story.

This story has been in the works for quite a while.  Early this year, while I was in my manic writing period, I developed a real love for Jeff Anderson and Caleb Stiles (you might have noticed my 13 part celebration of that youngster). Skip and I had already been conversing after I read one of his Christmas stories (Angels and Devils, which was set in Dallas, and I was trying to deduce the mall in the story).

After reading the entire Mr. Anderson Looks Back (and Caleb at least twice) and discussing it with Skip, I wrote some fanfic about Caleb, then Mr. Anderson.  The first one was based on Skip's original inspiration for Caleb, and is no longer possible, since Caleb Looks Back (with Skip's permission) took Caleb in a different direction,  It's the other story that's important now.

I wrote, simply as something for Skip to appreciate, a 14 page treatment that mixed actual story with quick descriptions of entire scenes.  To be honest, it was a self-insert story, and Charlie is very much based on me at that age.  I enjoyed writing it and hoped he would enjoy reading it.

He loved it.

He loved it so much that he encouraged me to expand it into an entire series.  I refused.  I refused because I was afraid I wouldn't get Mr. Anderson's voice correct.  Instead, Skip agreed to co-author it, though he put a huge amount of work into expanding and developing my original ideas.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy the final result as much as I did.

You are always welcome to recommend stories here, let people know about it, and share news here.  I'm also always happy to have other author's come to talk about there stories or just ask questions.

HOWEVER, while Ian was very supportive of me starting this forum and the site hosting my own stories, he and I have not always seen eye to eye, and I don't want to do anything to make him think I/we are trying to replace him or his forum in any way.  I have to much respect for all the work he's done to want to disrespect him even by suggestion; so if we do encourage people to come here while the MMSA forum is down, let's do it in a way that's clear we're only suggesting it as a temporary alternative.

Thank you all for your kind thoughts.

To be honest, I'm doing pretty well.  It's been about 15 months since Mom was first diagnosed.  She recovered from that initial bout, but it spread, the third round failed, and she was too weak to try again.  While there was a rapid decline, we've known this was coming for a while and I've had time to come to grips with it.

I never allowed my kids to be very close with my Mom, because of how she'd treated me, and I never saw any changes in her behavior.  She showed up for some holidays, since she spent many of them with her husband and his family.  My only kids who were ever close to her was Steve (the elder), whom would often join me for holidays back then, before I got married; Tommy and Caleb, who were her biological grandkids; and Parker, whose mother lived near mine, so when he first lived here, but stayed at school there, he would go to Mom's house until he could be picked up.

Much to my shock - my step-father, whom I've always thought was an emotional eunuch, and with whom I was not only not close, but felt neglected and abused, has taken it very hard, which surprised me.  No matter how I feel about him, he's still a human being, and he wasn't bad to my mom, so....
