is it it possible Cruz could win narrowly and still be damaged goods

Cruz is damaged goods.  The fact that he ran against Trump for the presidential nomination, was insulted by him and lost to him, then went asking for his help in fundraising just proves what a hypocritical coward he is.

My personal opinion is, for a Democratic challenger to be within one (or a few) points of a Republican in the polls, it means the Republican is in a lot of trouble.

I think there are a lot of reasons for that.  Everything from people getting tired of Republicans, to Trump backlash (especially since Texas has a large Hispanic community), to the fact that Cruz made a fool of himself in the last Presidential election, and he's continued to do so since then.

I read today that the Republicans are currently suffering the same malady that Democrats suffered in 2016 - complacency.  As Beto says almost every day on his Facebook posts, what happens in the end really depends on turn out.  Fortunately, Beto does seem to be energizing his base.

Without getting to deep into politics, I have been thinking about asking what the people living in Texas think is going to happen to Cruz in November.  The national media that I have been watching says that he is in deep trouble, but I don't know how much salt to take with that :).  Do the people in Texas think he is in trouble, or is this the media trying to create a story to get more viewers?

P.S., I haven't asked before this, because I don't want to start a discussion about WHO should be elected.  I am trying to see what the local predictions are for the election, not debate about the candidates.

While it's obviously rather a tongue in cheek reference, the simple fact is that Ted Cruz is desperate and scared.  After all the trouble between him and Trump two years ago, he still invited Trump to raise funds for him.  A previous attack is on the fact that Beto used to be in a punk band - bass player, I think, which just made Beto look better to the people who support him.  And then the RNC (maybe?) put out an add trying to make Cruz look cool.... Which failed miserably, in case you were unsure.
