For all of you who celebrate on the same day we do here, I hope it was a great day.
Things are crazy for me these days. Besides myself, I have four people living here full time (Connor, Curtis, and Duncan, while Craig has been a legal adult for over a month now!). I also (still) have eight college students living here when school's out - between the pandemic more or less ending, and so few left at home, that number's finally going to start shrinking over the next year or two.
Now, that doesn't sound too bad, but a LOT of my older kids still live in this area. That means my house ends up being a great place for people to get together. I don't actually mind, but if you've been following this forum for a while, you KNOW how many kids have lived here through the years. Of what I think was 23 adult kids who stopped by at some point today (I think they all stayed at least 2 hours or more, and some of them were here by 11am and stayed for the Cowboys game), I believe it's up to 18 of them who have their own families (at least significant others, if not children). Besides them, my mom came, my step-mom's youngest (step) son came by after eating with her, Cathy and her family came over to make sure Barry was still going by there tonight (and they stayed a while), my aunt came, my cousin Darren and his family came out (it's too hard for his mom to make the trip back and forth out there, but she doesn't want to move), my nephew Jason and his family ate with us.... Yeah, we had other visitors, but I think that's all that were here for the actual meal or major grazing.
Now, here's where you can tell I'm really getting old, but Noah and Barry took off Tuesday night to drive up here, and took over. They handled all the meat that needed to be cooked (some I order already cooked and it just needs to be warmed). If I have the numbers right, we had four smoked turkeys, four fried turkeys, 2 cajuns turkeys, 2 baked turkeys, a grilled turkey, a ham, a brisket, a roast, some steak medallions, and (because we weren't sure if Tommy was coming or not when the planning was done and there are other vegetarians in the family these days), mushrooms, egg plants, and salmon.
Ryan showed up yesterday to take over the kitchen (well, he tried, I think he and Van managed to finally co-exist), and prepared pretty much all the sides - stuffing, several potato recipes, green bean casseroles, candied yams, baked corn, and I don't know how many other sides. Craig has turned out to be an incredible patissier, and he handled all the desserts.
I suppose most of you don't know, but I was sick as a dog this week. We think it was food poisoning, though I have no idea what I could have eaten to cause it. Still, I was extremely ill Sunday night, barely got out of bed Monday, and didn't eat a full meal until... well, really not until today. About all I did for this Thanksgiving was authorize credit card expenditures and enjoy it.
The scary thing is, after all this time, people still bring food and leave it for us. Come Sunday, there'll only be four of us in the house, and I'm pretty sure we have enough leftovers to feed those four and all their friends until the next holiday.
