I go back to 1966 and the disgusting way they carried on when they played England. Something they have done ever since and still do as evidenced by the way their goalkeeper behaved during the penalty shootout. He should have been sent off, as it was he got away with it and they won.

I don't usually support the French in anything, but I have to support anyone against Argentina.

English football fans have long memories! Test English football fans always fail: See if you can talk about Maradona for one minute without mentioning the hand of God. If Maradona had not said anything it would all be forgotten by now, like most other dodgy decisions. English fans forget the dodgy decisions which went in England's favour.

I did the Spanish Wordle today and it came to a point where the word had to have a double "s", which is not found in Spanish. Puzzled, I revealed the answer and it was "Messi". I should have known!

I remained completely impartial as always in gloating over France losing last night.

Ah yes! We've just won in the quarter finals. I'd lost count. It must have been the celebratory extra bottle!

Actually it ¡s the semi-final when they will play France.

EDIT: Just noticed that this is my 1000th post.

Absolutely! All over Morocco we're celebrating Morocco beating Portugal tonight, having already beaten Belgium and Spain, to reach the final of the World Cup to be played next week. An exciting, nail-biter of a game. One-nil meant that I was on the edge of my seat until the final whistle!  Portugal might have scored at any time.

Up in Rabat, the King, wearing a Morocco team shirt, and his son, Prince Moulay Hassan, were driven through the streets amongst the jubilant throng by his brother Prince Moulay Rachid. They were waving flags through the open windows. I don't think that could happen in many other capital cities.

Morocco's achievement is also being celebrated tonight in other Moslem countries, other Arab countries and other African nations.  Their own teams have been knocked out but they're all joyfully showing solidarity with us.

So now on to the final next week!

Well, I watched the Wales match on a screen last night.  The commentary was in Arabic but as far as I could understand Wales did very well.  They came second!

By the way, who was the other team? Some obscure country? Ivor will know.  (-;

Not exactly relevant, but a relevant tangent.  Make sure to listen to the last note, especially you, Em:

Linda Lavin, btw, will be 85 years old next month and is still performing.  Brilliantly.

Did anybody know? Wales has an international football team! And very unusually, this year they've qualified for the World Cup!

It seems that a song written by Dafydd Iwan years ago has recently established itself as the Welsh soccer anthem.  Who needs Nessun Dorma?

Here is a link to a video.  All the  crowd in the stands seem to know the words, or at least the chorus.

https://youtu.be/emPhXdwhQoE

Dafydd Iwan himself leads the fervent singing, full of hwyl and a few tears of joy.

If you want to join in, (and how could you not?), here are the words of the chorus :

Ry'n ni yma o hyd,
Ry'n ni yma o hyd,
Er gwaetha pawb a phopeth,
Er gwaetha pawb a phopeth.
Er gwaetha pawb a phopeth
Ry'n ni yma o hyd,
Ry'n ni yma o hyd,
Er gwaetha pawb a phopeth,
Er gwaetha pawb a phopeth,
Er gwaetha pawb a phopeth,
Ry'n ni yma o hyd.

Easy!
