I agree, that is probably as much as you want to share about Misha.  The work he is doing is high risk at times, so the more you don't share the better it is for him.  It is wonderful just knowing he is doing what he enjoys and is happy.

Nice to hear he's doing well!  :) Only thing is that he is far away from the rest of his family.

I am limited in what I can/should say about Mickey.

Mickey graduated college with degrees in Journalism and Russian Studies.  He got a masters in International Relationships.

I'm going to skip a few steps here, but Mickey (he goes by Misha again) is now living in Belgium and works with NATO as a translator.  He has spent time in the Ukraine.

At this time, he's going to be applying for Belgium/EU citizenship within the year.  He came home a couple of weeks ago for Van's birthday, and he'll be coming back for two weeks for Van's graduation.

Other than that - he loves his work, is dating a nice Polish lady who works in an office near his (they met during lunch and started talking), has a nice apartment he shares with an American (who loves sports, so they get along great).  We exchange email a lot and video chat occasionally, and I guess that's really about it.

I should start by saying that Mickey loved his trip to Russia.  He has worked hard to keep up his language skills since I've known him.  There was some amusement at his accent, but the fact that he's a native born Russian and an adopted Texan seems to have earned him some points.

I think everyone knows that Mickey has a double major in Russian Studies and Journalism.  He's also taken a lot of computer courses - almost enough he could have minored in it.  I did suggest that, but I think he's getting tired of school, so he's staying on track to graduate next May.

I should say that Mickey is still making money from his online presence.  As busy as he is, he still keeps up his sports blog and related.  He's also been able to turn that into some tickets and invitations from time to time, which really tickled his fancy.  Besides that, he also has a less busy blog that mostly deals with what's going on in Russia these days, in relation to the rest of the world.

Overall, while he does dislike being so far away from Van, he seems like he's really happy with where he is in life.

I keep forgetting that Mickey is actually my oldest kid in college.  He's 22 days older than Ryan, but he started kindergarten a year late, since his English was really weak.  Because of that, Ryan was always a year ahead of him in school.  Of course, Ryan took two years off after high school to tour in that musical, so he started college a year behind Mickey.  Of course, Mickey is double majoring, and he's playing a lot of sports (mostly local or intramural, not on school teams), so he's taking five years to graduate, so you end up with both of them scheduled to graduate next year.

Mickey has to fly to come home, and it literally takes his flight longer than it takes Noah, Barry, and the boys to drive from their college.  Then he has time to load planes and to get to the airports and back, so he doesn't get home often.  He comes for Thanksgiving most of the time, always for Christmas, Spring Break has been about 50/50, and he's made a few other trips, like for Van's 16th birthday.  Oh, but he comes home every summer, or at least he has.

Which is not to say he won't be coming home this summer.  It's just that, as a Russian Studies student, he's taking a couple of weeks to visit Russia just after school ends, so he won't be home until the last week of this month.

Mickey seems very happy.  While we consider each other family, I was never close friends with him like I have been with some boys.  I made an effort, but Mickey has always been a huge sports fan, and that's just not an interest of mine at all.  On the other hand, not having an interest in common doesn't mean you can't like each other.  I don't think Mickey was unhappy in high school, but he really seems to have bloomed in college.  I know he has a lot of friends there, he's very active in a number of activities, he really enjoys having time and teams to play a lot of sports, and he's holding his grades steady at right around 3.4, so I don't think we have anything about which to complain.

By the way, what's Mickey's double major? He started out with Russian Studies, right? Or something like that?

Russian studies and Journalism.

Aww, Mickey is one of my favorites among your kids. I hope you get to spend some one-on-one together while he's home for Van's birthday. Or that he and Van do. :) Your whole conversation with him reminds me of when he not-so-directly asked you to go to college orientation with him.

Anyway, what you told him was really very sweet. :)

The shocking part of all of this is that Van is 16.   :o

The shocking part is that it was January of '08 when Van and Misha moved in with us.

I can still remember the two of them pecking at food, and then Mickey sitting by the tub while I bathed Van, and got him into a pair of Bryce's old pajamas I managed to find.  I almost had to fight to make Mickey shower, before I finally tucked the two of them into bed together (with Cepo in the room, with his own food, water, and liter box, because he kept growling at all the other animals smells).

Now here Van is, nearly as tall as I am - taller than Mickey now.  He took over, developed and ran that charity concert - not just playing keyboards, but organizing the shower, shuffling the performances, dancing, singing, and hosting, and he did it while showing consideration for other cultures.

All that and he's still painting and doing extra school work online.

And it's not just Van.  Mickey might not be quite as impressive as his little brother, but he is attending one of the top schools in the world, and making great grades while holding a double major.  While he didn't make the team, he did try out for the university baseball team, and he still makes time to ump and to play on his own.

So yeah, I'm shocked at how fast the time seems to have gone by, but  I'm damned proud, too.
