I enjoy step-father stories where the new father is kind and loving but firm and strict. Burt loves Cody and genuinely cares for his new step-son and, even in his "harsh" punishments, shows he has the boy's best interest in mind. Cody needs to let the idea of Burt grow on him.
At issue is Cody's grades, both academic and conduct. Cody can do better and he knows it but elects to be lazy and a clown. Burt tells Cody that it is time he be held accountable and gives the boy fair warning. Cody doesn't believe that his step-father will be true to his word.
The inevitable serves to build Cody's character but it builds a bond between Cody and Burt. The outcome also proves to open Cody's eyes to something else unexpected in his life.
