Did you read about the a-hole mayor of Colorado City, Texas, who told the freezing citizens asking for some help they could either help themselves or perish; that neither government nor energy service providers owed them anything. He's a real humdinger. He's resigned, but Mr. Rugged Individualist is whining that his wife lost her job because of his assholery.

Yes, I saw it, and I'm glad to see him running before the end of the day.  He said 'people took it out of context', and I'd love to know what the context was supposed to be, that he thought abandoning his citizens during record breaking bad weather justified.  As for his wife, my understanding is she was not fired for what he said, but because she tried to defend him and shot her ownself in the foot.

What we were told is that 'if it lasts longer than 45 minutes at a time, it's a power outage, not a blackout'.  Maybe it's difference, since we live in a more suburban area than you.

That was the original criteria, but by Monday, Oncor and ERCOT were singing a very different tune. We're still having blackouts but they are getting much shorter. Starting yesterday evening, our house returned to normal warmth and didn't drop in temp below the 60s despite some evening and nighttime power drops.

It seems Texas did nothing to protect its grid from extreme winter weather, leading to massive loss of power sources. (Joys of deregulation.) Windmills were frozen up, natural gas pipelines froze up, and even nuclear energy was affected. Our idiot governor made himself a national laughingstock yesterday by suggesting the problem was all the windmills; if Texas were to adopt all "green" energy, we'd be far worse off, according to the Horror in a Wheelchair. (Note: Places with very cold climates rely on wind energy but they have winterized their equipment.)

I don't know why our grid was only prepared for extreme summer weather. It's not as if Texas has never had periods of extreme cold and winter storms. They may be relatively rare, but it's ridiculous that the state handled such occasions far better several decades ago.

I think that's just power outages Kat.  We haven't lost power yet, maybe because we're pretty far out in the suburbs.

Like everything else, this does have a political element, since several of Texas Republican politicians mocked California for having rolling blackouts last summer, during their record setting heatwave.

Nope, not power outages. This is planned insanity, not downed power lines. It's apparently the only way to prevent the grid from going down entirely. But not to worry. Governor Abbot is going to get some answers. :P If you're not experiencing the rolling blackouts, you're lucky.

Thanks, Padraig!

Well, I've got another service period. No telling how long it will last, and the newscast I managed to catch suggests no one working on it knows. We're not as bad off as some, who've had over 24 hours without any power. My family in the Rio Grande Valley are among those, though they were fortunate to have a couple of generators. Thanks for the good thoughts, everyone!

Wishing you well.  I watched the reports come in as to how badly your area was being hit.  Sending warm thoughts.

We got it bad but at least we kept power.

That sounds terrible. I guess you won't read this until after it's over, but I wish you the best, and I I hope you'll manage to deal with the situation without catching a cold or something worse.

We had an unprecedented snow storm in Madrid this winter and because of a cold wave afterwards we had loads of snow, ice and mobility problems for a relatively long period. It seems that more than mobility problems you are having power supply problems. Hopefully, that service will be back to normal very soon, and in the meantime I hope you can minimize the inconveniences.

Keep warm!

Editing: checking the weather predictions, it seems you'll be back to normal, mild weather from this weekend on, so that's something to look forward to.

Good excuse for not getting out of bed!

Seriously, I hope the pipes don't freeze and that you are able to stay warm. Also that it will not be too long before normality is restored.

See what you get for turning your backs on Trump :P

Hey, everyone:

The area where Jack and I live is experience rolling blackouts due to unprecedented power demands. Dallas temp this morning was -1 F. Inside temp was 40 F. We're getting about an hour of power before losing it for 8-10 hours at a time. This is the threshold of hell, which is apparently frozen rather than fiery. Anyway, I don't expect to have much online time until power service normalizes.
